Air Canada Cuts 24 US Routes Since 2012

Air Canada has permanently ended service to 24 US airports since 2012, cancelling nearly 140,000 flights. The cuts have most heavily impacted smaller regional destinations, with Bradley International and Baltimore airports seeing the largest reductions.

Fleet Routes: Air Canada has permanently ended service to 24 US airports since 2012, cancelling nearly 140,000 flights

Air Canada has cancelled flights to 24 US airports since 2012, eliminating 139,695 transborder flights. The airline's sharpest decline in routes occurred in 2018, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium.

While Air Canada maintains a strong domestic and international network, these cuts have primarily affected smaller regional US airports. The airline can use preclearance facilities at major Canadian airports, making some US regional destinations less necessary where market demand is insufficient.

The Biggest Network Gaps

The most significant cut was Air Canada's service to Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Connecticut. The airline operated more than 30,473 flights from Toronto and Montreal to Bradley over nearly two decades before ending the route.

The second-largest gap resulted from axing the Toronto to Baltimore (BWI) route in 2024. This route had been relaunched just a year earlier in 2023. Air Canada also served Baltimore from Montreal until 2022, operating a total of 20,837 flights to the airport since 2006.

Strategic Pullbacks and Regional Cuts

Air Canada abandoned regular service to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), though it still flies to LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR). The airline optimizes its partnership with United Airlines through United's hub at Newark. LaGuardia remains useful for its proximity to Manhattan.

The airline also dropped several shorter regional services to smaller US cities. These cuts included Rochester (ROC), Harrisburg (MDT), and Syracuse (SYR) in 2018, and Milwaukee (MKE) in 2022. A full list of the top ten discontinued routes, based on total flight volume, is shown below.

Other routes with over 1,000 flights in the last two decades that were cut include services from Toronto to Allentown (ABE), San Jose (SJC), Grand Rapids (GRR), Richmond (RIC), Memphis (MEM), Portland (PWM), and Dayton (DAY).

Minor Route Terminations

Several routes saw very limited service before being axed. Air Canada ended its Toronto to Savannah (SAV) route in 2020 after just 647 flights. The Toronto to Omaha (OMA) route was cut after 504 flights.

Other notably small operations included Atlantic City (ACY), served only in 2015 with 64 flights; Eagle Vail (EGE), served until 2018 with 52 flights; and Vancouver to Lihue, Hawaii (LIH), which ended in 2019 after 43 rotations. This analysis does not account for broader reductions in service frequency to airports that Air Canada still serves.
