American Airlines Links Fiji Awards
American Airlines AAdvantage members can now book connecting American flights with expensive 'Enhanced Award' seats on Fiji Airways.

American Airlines has quietly updated its AAdvantage program to allow connections on its own flights when booking expensive 'Enhanced Award' seats on Fiji Airways. The change, detailed in an internal memo reviewed by View From The Wing, means travelers from non-gateway cities can book a single itinerary combining an American domestic flight with a Fiji Airways long-haul segment, even when traditional saver award space is unavailable.
What Changed for Fiji Airways Awards
There are two distinct types of Fiji Airways award inventory bookable with AAdvantage miles. Standard partner awards use saver seats Fiji releases at published pricing. These could already include American Airlines connections. Enhanced Awards are additional, variable-price seats made available at much higher mileage costs.
The key update is that the system now properly combines these high-cost Enhanced Awards with eligible American Airlines flights. American's booking engine will automatically display these mixed itineraries. This integration offers more than booking convenience. It allows for through-checked baggage and makes misconnections the airlines' responsibility. It also significantly expands the number of U.S. departure cities for these awards.
Award Pricing and Value
Standard saver award pricing for Fiji Airways business class between North America and the South Pacific remains 80,000 AAdvantage miles one-way. Enhanced Awards are a separate, supplemental inventory with dynamic pricing.
| Award Type | Description | Example Business Class Price (One-Way) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Partner Award | Saver seats at published partner pricing. Can include American connections. | 80,000 miles |
| Enhanced Award | Additional, variable-price inventory. Now combinable with American flights. | Up to 405,000 miles |
The memo confirms that the 80,000-mile saver seats are unaffected and remain available when Fiji Airways releases them. The high prices for Enhanced Awards often yield poor value, typically around 1 to 1.4 cents per mile. American now describes its partner chart prices as 'estimated starting values.'
Potential Use Cases for High-Cost Awards
There are limited scenarios where these expensive Enhanced Awards might be considered. Members with very large mileage balances who prioritize a specific flight over value could use them. They may also appeal to travelers locked into inflexible dates, like school holidays or weddings, when saver awards are gone. Last-minute travelers comparing the award to an unusually high cash fare might find it worthwhile. Some may also use miles they mentally value at zero because they were earned long ago.
Fiji Airways adopted AAdvantage as its loyalty program and joined the oneworld alliance on April 1, 2025. American had promised 'enhanced' redemptions when announcing the partnership. This deeper integration of award inventory with American's domestic network is a logical progression, even as the carrier's Dallas to Nadi route is set to end soon. A similar layer of extra, high-priced inventory was recently added for partner Air Tahiti Nui, with business class awards sometimes exceeding 300,000 miles.
