The Cranky Dorkfest 2026 event for aviation enthusiasts concluded this past weekend at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), described by organizer Cranky Flier as the biggest iteration yet. The event featured a morning ramp visit with five aircraft on static display and an afternoon main event with giveaways from numerous airlines.

Organizers reported perfect weather as the event began at the Flight Path Museum. Los Angeles World Airports expanded the event perimeter and provided a DJ, Randy's Donuts, coffee, water, and commemorative hats for attendees.

The Static Display Lineup

Five aircraft were available for tours during the morning ramp visit. The lineup included specialized and heritage liveries from several major carriers.

According to the source, United's 787-9 drew significant interest despite not having a special livery, with long lines forming to see the interior. Southwest created special posters of its Independence One aircraft for the event.

The Main Event and Giveaways

The afternoon portion of Cranky Dorkfest shifted to a park near an In-N-Out Burger. The organizer noted that street parking filled quickly and that the restaurant, while warned, appeared overwhelmed by the crowd. More airlines participated in handing out items at this year's event.

Southwest set up a table to pass out water, United distributed branded socks, and Mexican carrier Volaris joined the festivities. The event's giveaway required amplified sound, a noted improvement from previous years.

A wide array of airlines and aviation companies contributed prizes. First-time participants included Air Canada, British Airways, Southern Airways Express/Mokulele, Sun Country, Volaris, and the owner of the Pan Am brand. They joined regular contributors such as JetTip, Flightradar24, The Air Current, and Seats.aero, alongside carriers like Alaska/Hawaiian, American, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, JetBlue, Porter, Southwest, and United.

Highlight prizes included 100,000 Atmos points from Alaska/Hawaiian, a large Boeing 787 model in the new Aurora livery, American's Medal of Honor livery model and centennial-branded items including a whisky decanter set, a detailed PacMin model of Southwest's Independence One from Southwest, and a behind-the-scenes hub tour from United. The source clarified that United's hub tour prize excludes Guam, though a United employee from Guam extended a personal tour invitation to the organizer.

Media Coverage and Future Plans

Following the giveaways, attendees ate burgers and watched aircraft, with a Lufthansa arrival from Frankfurt noted as a particular treat. The organizer credited a write-up in AAA Westways magazine and local media coverage from outlets like ABC7 and KNX with helping attract more local first-time attendees this year.

The event concluded with the announcement of the date for next year's gathering. Cranky Dorkfest 2027 is scheduled for September 18, with RSVPs slated to open in late July or early August.
