Lufthansa A340-600 Final Flight Review

A passenger flew on one of the final Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 flights from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles in business class. The aircraft is scheduled for retirement on October 25, 2026, after nearly 23 years of service, and the flight showcased the carrier's refreshed 'Project FOX' soft product.

Cabin and Seat Impressions

The business class cabin on this aircraft features a 2-2-2 seat configuration. The passenger noted this layout is no longer competitive in 2026 but was deemed perfectly adequate for a daytime flight. Lufthansa's bedding has improved and now includes a mattress pad, a duvet, and a pillow.

The 'Project FOX' Soft Product

Lufthansa has reimagined its soft product to be more competitive, particularly with rival Air France. The new service flow was evident from the moment of boarding. A flight attendant offered a welcome drink choice of Champagne or Lufthansa's new Avionic aperitif, served with a bag of mixed nuts in a yellow bag.

The crew was described as quite friendly and engaging. The passenger felt the new service flow creates additional work for flight attendants but sensed they are proud to offer an elevated product.

Dining and Service Experience

Lunch began after takeoff. It started with an amuse bouche served in a Lufthansa-branded ramekin. For an appetizer, the passenger selected smoked trout, which was served with a truffled artichoke cream, tomatoes, and warm bread and was described as excellent.

The main course was a beef filet with cognac pepper sauce. It was cooked well-done, which the passenger noted is typical for Lufthansa, but was beautifully presented and tasted pretty good despite being overcooked.

Dessert included a cheese tray and fresh berries. The passenger also requested and received a strawberry basil tartlet served with rhubarb compote, calling it a delicious way to end the meal.

As the flight neared Washington Dulles, the passenger used the 'Sky Selection' à la carte service. This service is available from after the main meal until one hour before landing, replacing a formal pre-arrival meal. The passenger tried currywurst, a Berlin specialty they had not eaten in almost 20 years, and a falafel wrap that they felt could have used less pita and more falafel.

Onboard Amenities and Final Thoughts
