United Airlines adds nine new European

United Airlines has announced plans to add nine new European destinations for the summer 2027 season. Eight of these routes will have no direct competition from other US carriers.

The growth is largely made possible by the introduction of the airline's new Airbus A321XLR fleet. These aircraft are scheduled to enter service in September 2026, initially on domestic routes for crew training. Transatlantic operations will begin in December 2026 on existing services from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.

A321XLR Routes Launch in Spring 2027

Five new markets will be opened using the A321XLR starting in early April 2027. The first will be a daily service from Newark to Luxembourg. Later in April, Washington Dulles to Toulouse will commence, operating as flight UA 222. Three more routes from Newark to Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille are planned to begin at the end of May or early June, coinciding with the peak summer travel period.

Additional Summer Services on Widebody and MAX Jets

Three further European destinations will see less-than-daily summer service operated by Boeing 767 aircraft from Newark. These are Ljubljana, Olbia, and Catania. United states that while these routes are within the published range of the A321XLR, they are long enough that the airline will not push the aircraft's limits. Terceria in the Azores will be served by Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, making it the shortest of the new transatlantic routes.

Other Network Additions

The expansion also includes additional flights from other US hubs. Washington Dulles will add a three-times-weekly service to Milan. Denver will gain a daily flight to Paris. Beyond the Atlantic, United plans to launch new Pacific services. These include a three-times-weekly, nonstop flight from San Francisco to Okinawa, which United claims will be the only direct option in that market. A daily Los Angeles to Osaka route is also scheduled.

The airline's continued focus on Europe reflects its assessment of the region as a prime summer destination for American travelers. The strategic deployment of the A321XLR, a more fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft capable of long-range flights, is central to this network growth into thinner markets.
