Delta adds Boston-Venice and Detroit-Athens summer 2027
Delta Air Lines will launch new seasonal transatlantic services from Boston to Venice starting May 7, 2027, and from Detroit to Athens beginning June 8

Delta Air Lines is expanding its transatlantic network with two new seasonal routes for summer 2027. The carrier will launch nonstop flights from Boston to Venice on May 7, 2027, and from Detroit to Athens on June 8, 2027.
Both routes will operate through late October. The Boston-Venice service will fly up to four times weekly, while the Detroit-Athens route will operate three times weekly. Delta will deploy widebody Airbus aircraft on both new services, each configured with the airline's four-cabin layout.
Boston-Venice route details
The Boston to Venice service will operate four weekly flights using A330-300 aircraft from May through October 2027. Flights will run from May 7 through October 29, 2027.
This addition makes Venice the 13th long-haul destination Delta serves from Boston Logan International Airport. During the peak summer season, the hub will offer 12 nonstop services to continental Europe. Boston becomes Delta’s third U.S. Airport with nonstop service to Venice, joining Atlanta and New York JFK.
Delta already flies from Boston to Rome year-round and to Milan seasonally. ITA Airways is the only other airline offering nonstop flights to Italy from Boston, with its year-round service to Rome.
Detroit-Athens route significance
Detroit launches its first nonstop service to Athens with three weekly flights using A330-200, expanding Delta's Athens network to four total routes. The new Detroit to Athens service will operate from June 8 through October 28, 2027.
This marks the first-ever nonstop connection between Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Athens. It will be Delta's seventh destination in continental Europe from Detroit and the 12th unique long-haul destination from the hub during the peak summer. Delta already serves Athens from its Atlanta, Boston, and New York JFK hubs.
The airline expects to leverage its domestic network, offering over 40 U.S. Connections through Detroit. Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority, highlighted the route's importance. "For the first time at DTW, travelers in Southeast Michigan will have nonstop access to Athens, one of the world’s most iconic destinations," Newton said.
Wider network strategy
These announcements are part of Delta's broader planning for the summer 2027 season. The airline is winding down its 2026 schedule and revealing new services for the following year.
Delta is focusing on linking more U.S. Cities to established European tourist hotspots using widebody jets. This contrasts with competitors like United Airlines, which is using smaller Airbus A321XLR aircraft to open routes to off-the-beaten-path destinations.
In addition to the European expansions, Delta recently revealed new service from Austin to Paris for summer 2027. That route will be Austin's first-ever nonstop service to Paris and will feed into partner Air France's extensive network.
Other route adjustments
Delta is making several other adjustments to its international network. The airline is planning earlier seasonal starts in March 2027 for several European routes from Minneapolis and Detroit to Rome. Service from Seattle to Rome will return in April 2027.
Flights to Catania, Porto, Prague, and Copenhagen are also scheduled for earlier starts in 2027. These shifts indicate a strategic focus on capturing early summer demand.
The carrier has also discontinued some services. It ended its New York JFK to Brussels route in January 2026 after 34 years. Its brief Boston to São Paulo service concluded in March 2025. A planned Boston-Honolulu winter schedule for 2026-2027 was sharply reduced.
Delta continues to adjust its global map, shifting capacity toward more competitive and in-demand routes. The new Boston-Venice and Detroit-Athens services are central to its 2027 transatlantic strategy.
