Senator Tommy Tuberville warned on the Senate floor that many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are furries. He made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, linking the claim to broader cultural and political concerns without providing evidence.

Tuberville described furry culture as a bizarre subset of transgenderism involving sexual attraction to animals and dressing up as them. He stated that when you walk onto a commercial flight, it is possible the pilot flying your plane could have a deranged fetish of dressing up like an animal. Senator Tommy Tuberville said: "Lord help us. It’s terrifying when you think about this."

Context of the furry fandom

The furry fandom involves fans of animal characters with human characteristics. It includes artwork, fiction, roleplay, online communities, and conventions. Many participants create a character or avatar called a 'fursona'. Some wear elaborate animal costumes called fursuits. There is an adult side to the furry fandom, but not all members participate in it.

Aviation connections within the fandom

Furry conventions have occasionally included aviation-themed meet-ups. The Furry Migration convention in Minneapolis advertised an 'Aviation Furs Meet-Up' for September 11-13. That event invited pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, and people interested in aviation.

In June 2022, a passenger posted from American Airlines’ Admirals Club in Boston while headed to the Biggest Little Fur Con in Reno. The tweet said the passenger was hoping to see others at the convention and wished safe travels to anyone going there. It was posted by @Goldeneyeuro on June 1, 2022.

Reactions and broader political context

Tuberville's speech reached an air traffic control discussion forum. One commenter asked if they would be issued fursuits or have to pay for them. Another replied, 'guilty, woof woof'. In a political discussion, a commenter responded to the warning by saying, 'We’re sitting ducks! The furry agenda is working.'

The remarks were part of a broader speech where Tuberville linked transgender individuals to violence. He cited the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the assassination attempt against President Trump. Tuberville alleged that Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk’s killing, was involved in 'transgender furry culture' and referenced the suspect’s transgender partner. He claimed Thomas Matthew Crooks, who attempted to assassinate Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, had been involved in online furry culture.

Tuberville cited an unidentified 2022 study which he said found transgender youths were at the highest risk of violent radicalization. He accused doctors of withholding information about lasting consequences of gender-transition procedures and performing them on minors without informing parents. Tuberville claimed patients often regretted surgery and hormone treatment. He said every single one of these doctors should have their medical licenses revoked and should spend the rest of their lives in prison.

The video clip of the speech was shared on Twitter by Brian Allen on September 23, 2026. The report references Senator Tom Coburn’s 2004 campaign in Oklahoma, where Coburn repeated a story about lesbianism in schools, suggesting it was another Senate urban legend similar to the furry pilot claim. Senator Tommy Tuberville is running for governor of Alabama.
