United Airlines shifts elite status to spend-only model with higher 2027 thresholds
United Airlines will require 32,000 qualifying dollars for its top 1K status in 2027, up from 18,000 in 2024, as it moves to a purely spend-based qualification system, eliminating flight segments as a metric.

United Airlines is overhauling its elite status qualification for the 2028 program year, moving to a spend-only model with significantly higher thresholds. Starting in 2027, Premier status will be awarded based solely on Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), ending the use of flight segments as a qualification metric.
Higher thresholds for top-tier status
The requirement for United's top 1K status will rise from 28,000 to 32,000 Premier Qualifying Points beginning in 2027. This represents an additional 4,000 PQPs needed. For points-only qualifiers, the increase is approximately 14%.
Impact on mixed-method qualifiers
The change hits hardest those who previously combined flights and spending. Members who reached 1K status through a combination of flight segments and spending will now need roughly 45% more PQPs than before. That group will need 10,000 more PQP to reach the same tier under the new system.
Four-flight minimum and head start details
Flyers must still take at least four United or United Express flights annually to qualify for status. Certain MileagePlus members with eligible United credit cards will receive a PQP head start at the beginning of 2027. The head start amounts are based on prior-year standing.
| Status Tier | PQP Head Start for 2027 |
|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 300 PQPs |
| Premier Gold | 600 PQPs |
| Premier Platinum | 900 PQPs |
| Premier 1K | 1,600 PQPs |
Members who open an eligible United credit card by December 31 will also receive the PQP head start deposit for the following year. For Premier Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, the 2027 PQP-only requirements are the same as the 2026 PQP-only thresholds.
Earning Premier Qualifying Points
United MileagePlus members earn 1 PQP per $1 spent on flights with the airline. Spending on the United℠ Explorer Card earns 1 PQP per $20 spent on everyday purchases, up to a maximum of 1,000 PQPs annually. Flyers can also earn PQPs on certain upgrades and extras purchased after booking. Partner flights booked through United (with a ticket starting with 016) are eligible for PQP earning, while partner flights not booked through United earn PQPs at a reduced rate.
Member reaction and context
Early flyer reactions are especially negative from members who relied on the flights route to status. One describes the increase as “punitive and almost offensive” and wonders whether 2027 is the year to become a free agent. Another says they’d already largely given up on 1K because of scarce advance upgrade space. This marks the biggest structural shift in how United awards elite status in years, following a trend where American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have focused exclusively on dollars spent for years in their loyalty programs. The changes to Premier status qualification begin in 2027 for activity that determines status for the 2028 program year.
