Frontier Airlines Exits New York JFK Airport On October 5

Frontier Airlines will cease all operations at New York JFK Airport on October 5, ending a two-year presence. The ultra-low-cost carrier cited high operating costs and will refocus its New York service on LaGuardia and Newark airports.

Frontier Airlines will stop flying from New York JFK Airport on October 5. The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier confirmed the final exit date to The Points Guy, ending its service at the airport after just two years.

The airline cited several reasons for the decision, including the persistently high costs of operating at the large airport. Frontier had already cut most of its JFK routes earlier this year, leaving only a single flight to Atlanta. That final Atlanta service will be the last to depart.

Exit From A Costly Hub

Aviation analysts had long questioned the viability of Frontier's budget model at an expensive airport like JFK. The carrier struggled to balance its ultra-low fares with the high operating costs there. In a statement, Frontier said it periodically reviews routes based on market demand, seasonality, and "costs associated with operating from a particular airport."

Last summer, Frontier operated eight nonstop routes from JFK. There had been rumors the airline might move to the airport's new Terminal 6, which is still under construction. Instead, Frontier has chosen to leave entirely.

Operations Shift To LGA And EWR

Frontier will now concentrate its New York area operations at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). From LaGuardia, the closest airport to Manhattan, Frontier serves eight year-round destinations and one seasonal route. From Newark, it operates five year-round ultra-low-cost routes.

The airline's route networks at these two airports are as follows:

AirportRoute TypeNumber of Destinations
LaGuardia (LGA)Year-round8
LaGuardia (LGA)Seasonal1
Newark (EWR)Year-round5

Despite the recent exit of Spirit Airlines, which was the second-largest carrier at Newark, Frontier says it has not made significant moves to backfill those abandoned routes. The airline did note it may explore new markets from Newark in the future.

A Possible Future Return

While October 5 marks the confirmed end of Frontier's current stint at JFK, the airline suggested the departure may not be permanent. The station closure does not preclude a return if market conditions change favorably later on.

Frontier is an ultra-low-cost carrier with a fleet of over 170 Airbus A320 family aircraft. Its model involves selling basic fares and charging extra for services like checked bags, seat selection, and meals. The airline serves more than 120 destinations across the Americas.

The carrier maintains 13 operating bases across the United States and Puerto Rico. Its all-economy Airbus fleet, comprising A320-200s, A320neos, A321-200s, and A321neos, seats between 180 and 240 passengers. Frontier has over 150 new A320neo and A321neo aircraft on order.
