Lufthansa will launch its first nonstop European service from Columbus, Ohio, on May 5, 2027. The new Frankfurt route gives John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) its first-ever direct transatlantic flight.

Lufthansa is adding Columbus and Phoenix as new U.S. destinations in 2027. The Frankfurt-Columbus route will begin on May 5, 2027, with three weekly flights. The Munich-Phoenix route will begin on August 3, 2027, also with three weekly flights. This expansion provides central Ohio travelers direct access to Lufthansa's network and connecting flights to global destinations.

Boeing 787-9 aircraft and seat configuration

The Columbus route will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 configured with 287 seats. This aircraft will introduce Lufthansa's new Allegris business class to the market. The specific cabin layout includes 28 Allegris business class suites, 28 premium economy seats, and 231 economy seats.

Schedule and flight details

Flights will run three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The eastbound flight from Columbus will depart at 4:20 p.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 6:15 a.m. the next day. The westbound flight duration is eight hours and 45 minutes. The eastbound trip takes seven hours and 55 minutes. The flight distance is approximately 4,248 miles each way. Columbus will initially receive 861 seats weekly in each direction.

Three flights per week will limit the route’s usefulness for some business travel needs. Phoenix will be served by an Airbus A350-900, with no confirmation that the Allegris business class will be available on that route. Lufthansa’s pilot training school is located in Arizona, but it has never served Phoenix commercially before.

Support and financial backing

The Columbus route is supported by JobsOhio’s Air Service Restoration program, which uses revenue guarantees to reduce launch risk for new air service. JobsOhio's program committed $36.8 million in revenue guarantees, and local partners contributed $10.1 million. This totals $46.9 million in statewide support since 2020. The larger financial commitments in the program cover broader regional partners, but no specific guarantee amount for Lufthansa is disclosed.

Lufthansa's earlier St. Louis route launch was supported by similar financial incentives. That route achieved an 88% load factor in 2025, up more than three points from 2024 and over seven points above the network average. Lufthansa increased its Frankfurt-St. Louis frequency from three to five weekly flights in summer 2026, with July load factors reaching 92.8%.

Network context and growth

Lufthansa operates 29 routes to the US from Frankfurt and Munich. Its network-wide load factor was approximately 81% in 2025 and 2026. Other recent U.S. successes include Raleigh/Durham, which achieved daily service in June 2026 with 91.7% occupancy in July, and San Diego, which reached a 93.6% load factor in 2026.

The new route adds Columbus to a list of central U.S. airports like Austin, Nashville, and St. Louis that have gained new European connections. Other carriers are also expanding. British Airways increased flights at Cincinnati from four to six weekly in summer 2026, with plans for daily service in summer 2027. Pittsburgh grew from four weekly flights in 2019 to daily summer operations. Air France launched Paris-Phoenix with three weekly 787 flights in May 2024, increasing to five weekly A350 services in 2025.

American Airlines and United Airlines plan to add new European destinations from Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington Dulles. KLM started Amsterdam-Las Vegas service with two weekly Dreamliner flights in 2019, building to daily summer service. KLM's Amsterdam-Austin service has remained around three weekly flights despite solid demand.

Airport development and loyalty

A new terminal at Columbus Airport is scheduled to open in early 2029. Construction began in December 2024. The terminal will increase annual passenger capacity to 13 million with 36 gates, seven more than currently available. It will feature a Y-shaped design inspired by the confluence of Columbus's Scioto and Olentangy rivers. The building will have a skylight larger than two basketball courts and two international arrival gates with customs facilities.

Lufthansa's Miles & More loyalty program members can earn and redeem miles on the new Columbus route. Dirk Janzen, vice president of passenger sales for the Americas at the Lufthansa Group, stated the launch is an important step in Lufthansa's continued expansion in the United States, its most important market outside its home markets. Ticket sales for the new route will open on October 20, 2026.
